Starfleet Enlisted Ratings

Ratings are general occupations that consist of specific skills and abilities. These ratings are held by enlisted personnel holding the grade of Petty Officer Third Class and above, and are obtained after a Crewman attends A School and passes the Starfleet Petty Officer's Exam. Each rating has its own specialty badge, which is worn on the sleeves of the uniform below the individual's rank insignia.

Ratings should not be confused with "rates," which describe Starfleet's enlisted pay-grades.

Enlisted personnel are referred to by their rating and rate. For example, if someone's rate is Petty Officer Second Class and his rating is Boatswain's Mate, then combining the two — Boatswain's Mate Second Class (BM2) — defines both rate and rating in formal address or epistolary salutation. The rates of Crewman and Crewman Apprentice lack ratings, and are thus personnel of these grades are addressed simply as "Crewman", while personnel holding the grade of Crewman Recruit are addressed as "recruit".

	Chief of the Boat OR Command Master Chief	COB
	The Chief of the Boat is the senior-most enlisted person on any Starfleet vessel, while the Command Master Chief holds the same position on any installation. Typically a Master Chief Petty Officer, this person is responsible for all enlisted personnel assigned to their post, and is a liaison between the ratings and the officers.
	Personnel Clerk	PN
	Personnel Clerks are responsible for assisting Personnel officers with administrative duties and provide enlisted personnel with information about Starfleet jobs, opportunities for general education and training, and promotion requirements. They assist enlisted members' families with reassignments in hardship situations. Personnel Clerks keep records up to date, prepare reports, type letters and maintain files.
	Mass Communications Specialist	MC
	Mass Communications Specialists are public affairs and visual information experts. They present the Starfleet story through a variety of media. Mass Communications Specialists write and produce print and broadcast journalism, news, and feature stories for military and civilian news sources. They record still and video photography of Starfleet operations, exercises, and other events.
	Legal Clerk	LN
	Legal Clerks are trained legal aides who assist professionals in the field of law. They work in the Starfleet Judge Advocate General's Corps, performing administrative and clerical tasks necessary to process claims and conduct court and administrative hearings. They maintain records, documents and legal reference libraries. They perform many duties related to courts-martial and nonjudicial hearings.
	Pay Clerk	PC
	Pay Clerks assist Starfleet Paymasters and Accountants in administrative and technical duties and are responsible for mediating pay disputes.
	Yeoman	YN	(Yeoman, Command)	YNC
	Yeomen perform secretarial and clerical work. They deal with visitors, calls and incoming communiqués. They organize files and order and distribute supplies. They write notices, directives, forms and reports.

	Navigator's Mates assist Navigation Officers with course plots, cartographical analysis, and analysis of stellar phenomena and other navigational hazards.
	Deckman	DN
	Deckmen are responsible for all non-Engineering-related flight deck operations, including the operation of fuel transfer systems, launch and recovery operations, and traffic direction in both shuttlebays and hangerbays.

	Yeomen perform secretarial and clerical work. They deal with visitors, calls and incoming communiqués. They organize files and order and distribute supplies. They write notices, directives, forms and reports.

Tactical

	Torpedoman's Mate	TM
	Torpedoman's Mates operate and maintain torpedoes and torpedo fire-control systems and are responsible for shipping and storage of torpedoes.
	Ordnance Disposal Technician	EOD
	Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technicians locate, identify, render safe and dispose of all forms of ordnance, both Federation and non-Federation. EOD technicians occasionally assist civilian law enforcement agencies.
	Yeoman	YN	(Yeoman, Tactical)	YNT
	Yeomen perform secretarial and clerical work. They deal with visitors, calls and incoming communiqués. They organize files and order and distribute supplies. They write notices, directives, forms and reports.

Security

	Master-at-Arms	MA
	Masters-at-Arms uphold law and order aboard ships, and Starfleet facilities. The basic duty of an MA is to enforce rules and regulations, maintain good order and discipline, and protect life and property. Some other duties include conducting criminal investigations, personal protective services, and taking part in correctional and rehabilitative programs.

	Weapons Instructors perform duties related to small arms instruction and lethal and non-lethal weapons training for all personnel assigned to their post.
	Yeoman	YN	(Yeoman, Security)	YNS
	Yeomen perform secretarial and clerical work. They deal with visitors, calls and incoming communiqués. They organize files and order and distribute supplies. They write notices, directives, forms and reports.

	Boatswain's Mate	BM
	Boatswain's Mates train and supervise personnel in all activities relating to deck operations, and frequently serve as Petty Officers-in-charge of small craft. Most Command Master Chiefs and Chiefs of the Boat were once Botswain's Mates, though there are exceptions to this rule.
	Operations Specialist	OS
	Operations Specialists operate and maintain operations equipment, Identify Friend of Foe (IFF) transponder equipment, and internal and external sensory and communications gear.
	Sensor Technician	ST
	Sensor Technician's operate and maintain external sensory gear, and are responsible for tracking objects and assisting in scientific operations, as well as for operating the sensor-jamming portions of Electronic Counter-Measures (ECM) systems.
	Signalman	SM
	Signalmen operate and maintain internal and external communications systems and operate the communications-jamming portions of Electronic Counter-Measures (ECM) systems.
	Computer Technician	CT
	Computer Technicians are responsible for operation, maintenance, and repair of all Starfleet computer systems.
	Holosystems Technician	HT
	Holosystems technicians maintain the Holodeck systems of Starfleet starbases and ground installations.
	Quartermaster's Mate	QM
	Quartermaster's Mates are Starfleet's supply clerks. They see that needed supplies are available including everything from clothing and machine parts to forms and food. They have duties as warehousemen, purchasing agents, stock clerks and supervisors, inventory clerks, buyers, parts clerks, and bookkeepers, and they assist logistics officers and quartermasters.
	Storekeeper	SK
	Storekeepers act as store managers and sales clerks.
	Culinary Specialist	CS
	Culinary Specialists prepare menus and order the quantities and types of food items. They operate kitchen and dining facilities, manage large facilities, keep records for food supplies and financial budgets, and can even serve as flight attendants on transport craft. They can also serve as personal food service specialists, household/estate managers or chefs for admirals, the Federation President, or for a commanding officer aboard ship or at shore bases. Ashore, Culinary Specialists often manage and maintain officers' clubs.
	Ship's Serviceman	SH
	Ship's Servicemen manage barber shops, tailor shops, ships' uniform stores, laundries, dry cleaning plants and cobbler shops.
	Instructor	IN	(Instructor, Physical)	INP
	Physical Trainers operate gymnasiums aboard Starfleet starships and starbases and act as personal trainers to Starfleet personnel.
	Librarian	SM
	Librarians are in charge of managing Starfleet libraries and assisting personnel in their use for both personal and professional matters.
	Musician	MU
	Musicians play in bands aboard starbases and large Starfleet ground installations.

	Engineer's Mates maintain propulsion machinery, including assigned auxiliary equipment propulsion control systems, electrical and electronic circuitry up to the printed circuit module, and alarm and warning circuitry. They also maintain refrigeration, air-conditioning, distilling-plant engines and compressors and other environmental control systems.
	Machinist's Mate	MM
	Machinist's Mates are responsible for the continuous operation of the many engines, compressors, gears, refrigeration, and air-conditioning equipment along with other types of machinery onboard ships and shore installations, as well as the maintenance of small craft.
	Damage Controlman	DC
	Damage Controlmen perform the work necessary for damage control, ship stability, and fire-fighting. They instruct personnel in damage control and CBR defense and repair damage-control equipment and systems.
	Transporter Technician	TT
	Transporter Technicians operate and maintain matter-transport systems and their associated auxiliary systems.
	Hull Maintenance Technician	HM
	Hull Maintenance Technicians are responsible for maintaining ships' hulls, fittings, piping systems and machinery. They install and maintain all shipboard and shore based plumbing and piping systems. They look after a vessel's safety and survival equipment and operate workbees.
	Builder's Mate	BU
	Builder's Mates are skilled construction personnel who build and repair all types of vessels, structures, and equipment, and work in shipboard fabrication facilities.
	Yeoman	YN	(Yeoman, Engineering)	YNE
	Yeomen perform secretarial and clerical work. They deal with visitors, calls and incoming communiqués. They organize files and order and distribute supplies. They write notices, directives, forms and reports.

	Hospital Corpsmen are medical professionals who provide health care to Starfleet personnel and their families. They serve as pharmacy technicians, medical technicians, nurse's aides, battlefield medics, and more. All work falls into several categories: first aid and minor surgery, patient transportation, patient care, prescriptions and laboratory work, food service inspections, and clerical duties.
	Surgical Technician	HMS
	Surgical Technicians are highly specialized Corpsmen who are trained to assist surgeons in more complex procedures than the average Corpsman is prepared for.
	Pathologist's Assistant	HMP
	Pathologists assistants assist in autopsies and preparation for post-mortem ceremonies.
	Counselor's Aide	HMC
	Counselor's Aides perform administrative duties to assist Starfleet counselors.
	Medical Equipment Specialist	HME
	Medical Equipment Specialists are responsible for maintenance and repair of all medical technologies.

CTMs or Maintenance Cryptologic Technicians maintain electronic and electromechanical equipment. CTNs or Networking Cryptologic Technicians handle computer communication. CTRs or Collection Cryptologic Technicians handle all communications intercepts. Finally, CTTs or Technical Cryptologic Technicians handle all communications by non-traditional means.
	Intelligence Specialist	IS
	Intelligence Specialists are involved in collecting and interpreting intelligence, especially secret information about enemies or potential enemies. They analyze photographs and prepare charts, maps, and reports that describe in detail the strategic situation all over known space.

Starfleet Marines do not use the rating system owing to the variation in their rank structure. Instead they use the Military Occupational Specialty codes, or MOS.
