The following is a chart of all rank insignia used by Starfleet since the uniform redesign of 2388. Rank is indicated by small metal pips worn on the left collar. Note that some of these ranks exist on paper only; for example, there is only one Master Chief Petty Officer of Starfleet in the Command department, and the maroon, royal blue, black, and white insignia are representations only. For staff officers and staff warrant officers, rank pips are silver rather than gold.
In addition to the standard insignia, there is a system of brevets for officers and warrant officers, indicated by a silver oval with the appropriate number of silver or black slashes on a gold background (or a silver background for staff officers). Brevets are issued for a variety of reasons, ranging from non-Starfleet or enlisted personnel holding an officers' duties on a starship or station, temporary grades for personnel on special duties or during times of war, active service by reserve officers, or promotions by commanding officers that have not yet been approved by the Starfleet Office of Personnel.
Starfleet has also reintroduced the dual-specialty designation system; in certain situations, personnel might wear uniforms with a particular departmental color, but the stripe on which their ranks appear will be of a different color. All instructors at Starfleet's various training facilities wear cream stripes underneath their ranks and all diplomatic personnel wear purple stripes. There are several other situations in which the dual-specialty designation would be used, including members of the Starfleet Marine Corps who are members of the Starfleet Marine Air Assault Division or who serve in the various staff branches and enlisted deck personnel with Starfighter Operations, who wear utility jumpsuits on deck duty of bright uniform colors to quickly identify their primary duties; the color of their jumpsuit will appear in place of the white rank stripe on their regular duty uniform.
It should also be noted that most enlisted personnel holding rates of Petty Officer Third Class and above have a rating in addition to their grade, and this is usually indicated by a pertinent logo attached below their comm-badge. Staff officer insignia were eliminated as part of the redesign.
